Everything you need to know for your visit to the Chocolate Museum

If you are a chocolate lover visiting Barcelona, the Chocolate Museum is a must stop for you. Not only will you be able to taste these cocoa delicacies, but you can also learn about their history in the city.

History of the Chocolate Museum

museu xocolata barcelona

From the 15th century, cocoa began to arrive at the port of Barcelona and began to be marketed and spread throughout the city. Chocolate became so popular that, during the 18th century, the king’s personal guard was known as “the chocolatiers” because they consumed chocolate on a regular basis. One of the military caserns was located in the convent of Sant Agustí del Born, built in the 14th century, which is currently the site of the Chocolate Museum.

After the destruction of the barracks in the War of Succession, the Barcelona City Council recovered the space in the 80s to install the foundation of the Guild of Confectioners of Barcelona. It was they who decided to open this museum to showcase the history of cocoa in Catalonia. In 1998, the guild initiated the project to disseminate the history of the Catalan tradition of the Easter cake, and, in 2000, the Chocolate Museum was inaugurated.

Activities and Spaces

The museum’s permanent exhibition shows the history of cocoa, how it arrived in Barcelona and its impact on the city’s economy. You can observe the evolution of cocoa from its origins to its popularization throughout Europe. In addition, you will learn about how chocolate molding techniques have evolved.

A large area of the museum is dedicated to impressive figures made entirely of chocolate. Some of them have been constructed using ancient techniques while others have applied newer methods.

As you would expect, you can also enjoy workshops and chocolate tastings. You will learn how to mold chocolate into different shapes, as well as learn decoration techniques. For adults, the museum offers wine and cava pairings, among many other types of chocolate tastings from the four continents where cocoa is grown.

In the museum’s cafeteria, you will find a tasting area with chocolates and cocoa handmade in the museum’s workshop. In this workshop, located in the center of the museum, you can watch the workers making chocolate from cocoa that comes from 13 different origins. This is part of the initiative called bean to bar, where they focus on authenticity and real and direct experience to recover the origins of this product, which can be purchased at the museum store.
