Everything you need to know for your visit to Arc de Triomf

Barcelona’s Arc de Triomf, located between Passeig de Lluís Companys and Passeig Sant Joan, was built as a symbol of the city’s entry into modernity. Today, it stands as an architectural gem and a perfect spot for walking, skating, cycling, or enjoying various activities and events. Let’s take a closer look at its origins and the architectural details that make this monument so remarkable.

History of the Arc de Triomf

Traditionally, triumphal arches have been built to celebrate military victories. However, Barcelona’s Arc de Triomf symbolised something very different: cultural, artistic, scientific, and economic progress.

In 1888, Barcelona hosted the Universal Exhibition, a five-month event that showcased the city’s technological advancements. The Ciutadella Park was chosen as the main venue for the exhibition, leading to significant renovations in the park and the surrounding areas. The Arc de Triomf was constructed as the entrance to the exhibition, located at the beginning of Passeig de Lluís Companys. This 50-metre-wide avenue was modernised with new infrastructures and adorned with eight bronze statues of important figures in Catalonia’s history.

Both the construction of the arch and the urban transformation for the 1888 exhibition were designed to highlight Barcelona’s potential in a wide range of fields.

After the exhibition, Passeig de Lluís Companys and the Arc de Triomf became spaces for various uses, including concerts, festivals, and other performances. They have also been popular locations for sporting events, such as races, cycling routes, and the Barcelona Marathon.

Architecture of the Arc de Triomf

The Arc de Triomf was designed by the postmodernist architect Josep Vilaseca, standing 30 metres tall and primarily built from red brick. Its design draws inspiration from the Neo-Mudéjar style, which combines Spanish, Arabic, and Asian influences.

While the structure follows a classical arch form, it is rich in symbolic details, reflecting the progressive ideals Barcelona aimed to convey during the exhibition. The decoration includes sculptures, ceramics, and ornate friezes, each representing different themes associated with the city:

  • Main frieze: Depicts Barcelona welcoming the 22 countries participating in the exhibition.

  • Rear frieze: Known as The Reward, symbolising the distribution of prizes to the exhibition’s participants.

  • Side friezes: Represent key concepts such as agriculture, industry, commerce, sciences, and the arts – the foundational pillars of 19th-century universal exhibitions, celebrating the ideals of progress in modern society.

At the very top of the arch, you’ll find the coats of arms of Spain’s 49 provinces, protected by the coat of arms of Barcelona at the centre.

This blend of historical significance, architectural beauty, and symbolic detail makes the Arc de Triomf a must-visit landmark in Barcelona.
