Everything you need to know for your visit to the Barcelona Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum of Barcelona is the perfect place to explore the city’s rich naval history. Whether you’re interested in maritime history or eager to learn about marine biology, this museum offers an experience you won’t want to miss. Below, we’ll delve into its history and architecture, as well as highlight some of its most notable exhibitions.

History of the Maritime Museum of Barcelona

Museo Marítimo de Barcelona

The Maritime Museum of Barcelona, also known as the Naval Museum, is housed in the Drassanes Reials (Royal Shipyards), a 13th-century building originally constructed to store warships for the Crown of Aragon. This building played a crucial role in Catalonia’s naval operations for several centuries, until the late 19th century, when military institutions vacated the shipyards, transforming them into a cultural space.

In the early 20th century, the Patronage of the Mediterranean Nautical Institute began the project to establish a maritime museum in Barcelona. The collection of ship models and nautical instruments from the Barcelona Nautical School, along with other artifacts and documents related to the city’s naval history, formed the foundation of the museum, which finally opened its doors in 1941.

Architecture of the Maritime Museum of Barcelona

The original building, constructed between the 13th and 14th centuries, is a remarkable example of Gothic architecture. It features a rectangular layout with towers at each corner and still preserves sections of the original city wall.

The interior consists of 10 Gothic naves, some reaching up to 120 meters in length and widths ranging between 5 and 13 meters.

Over the years, the building has undergone several renovations. The most notable took place in the 1980s, when the space was expanded from 4,000 m² to 10,000 m².

The Maritime Museum's exhibitions

Inside the museum, you will find an extensive collection of ship models, maritime paintings, and nautical instruments.

One of the most popular exhibitions is the replica of the Royal Galley, a ship built in the 16th century for the Battle of Lepanto. In 1971, to commemorate the centenary of the battle, the museum unveiled a full-scale reconstruction of the vessel, measuring 60 meters in length.

Visitors can also explore both permanent and temporary exhibitions, which cover topics such as the maritime history of Catalonia, piracy, marine wildlife, and the role of women at sea. Additionally, the museum hosts family-friendly activities and workshops, providing a fun and educational way for children to learn more about the sea and its history.
