Everything you need to know for your visit to Plaza Real in Barcelona

Plaza Real in Barcelona has been transformed from a former convent to a tribute to the Catholic royal family. However, in recent decades, it has become a space full of activities, gastronomy and nightlife in one of the most central areas of the city. Thanks to its decorative elements and history, this square represents one of the most important spaces in the city. Next, we will talk about its origin and architecture.

History of Plaza Real

Fuente Plaza Real

Plaza Real in Barcelona was named after the Catholic kings who reigned during that time. In 1836, due to the confiscation of ecclesiastical buildings in Barcelona, especially around the Ramblas, they were encouraged to build public spaces for the enjoyment of the whole city. In Barcelona, the process of disentailment placed a strong emphasis on promoting urban development. As a result, many of the religious buildings that were disentailed were repurposed as public spaces for the local community.

On the site of the former Capuchin convent known as Santa Madrona, architect Francesc Molina designed this well-known square.

At the same time, in 1847, the grand Liceu Theater was inaugurated, and it was decided that the new Plaza Real would serve as a leisure hub for Barcelona’s bourgeoisie, offering hospitality services and shops. Construction began in 1850 and was completed ten years later.

Although the square originally catered exclusively to the bourgeoisie, today it has become a popular space filled with terraces, restaurants, and nightclubs enjoyed by both tourists and locals alike. Additionally, the square is often used for various events, such as summer festivals, carnival, or outdoor markets.

Architecture of Plaza Real

Barcelona’s Plaza Real was designed by architect Francisco Molina, drawing inspiration from French urban planning during the Napoleonic era. The rectangular, porticoed square is surrounded by stately buildings, mostly hotels, in a classical style, with facades adorned with elements that reflect the city’s rich history.

The square features several decorative elements steeped in history. Among them is the fountain of the Three Graces, designed by Antoine Durenne. This fountain was installed in 1876 after a statue honoring Ferdinand the Catholic was destroyed by locals throwing stones at it. Another notable feature is the two streetlamps designed by Antoni Gaudí in 1879, adorned with dragons and Mercury helmets. Both original streetlamps remain in the square today.

Later, in the 1980s, the square was modernized with the addition of its iconic palm trees surrounding the central area. Access for vehicles from La Rambla was also removed, leaving the square with three exclusively pedestrian entrances.
