Guide: visiting the Port Vell

Port Vell in Barcelona is not just a seafront promenade to enjoy Mediterranean views; it is a space that combines history, culture, and leisure. Initially a strategic commercial hub, it has evolved into a vibrant entertainment centre for both tourists and locals. In this guide, we’ll explore the port’s history, its key areas, and the activities you can enjoy at Port Vell.

History of the Port Vell

Port Vell Barcelona

Port Vell, or the “Old Port,” has seen significant change since its beginnings. In the 15th century, due to a lack of protection from storms, work was undertaken to improve the port’s infrastructure, which in turn improved navigation and trade conditions.

Over the following centuries, further modernisations were made to keep up with Barcelona’s evolving economy and growing population. However, by the 1980s, the port had become neglected, with outdated facilities and a lack of investment. The rise of newer, larger, and more modern ports in other cities had led to a decline in Barcelona’s role as a key trading route.

It wasn’t until 1986, when Barcelona was selected to host the 1992 Olympic Games, that a comprehensive urban renewal plan for the city was put into place, which included the redevelopment of Port Vell.
This major transformation led to the construction of landmarks such as the Maremagnum shopping centre, the Barcelona Aquarium, and the redesign of Moll de la Fusta into a wide, palm-lined promenade, alongside the creation of new leisure areas.

Today, Port Vell is a lively area, perfect for a stroll and a place to enjoy a variety of activities, whether commercial, cultural, or recreational.

Parts of Port Vell

The Port Vell area can be divided into several zones, each with its own function, offering visitors a variety of experiences.

  • The commercial area includes the Maremagnum shopping centre and the Rambla del Mar, a scenic promenade that connects the Maremagnum with La Rambla de Cataluña, another well-known shopping district.

  • The cultural area is home to the Barcelona Aquarium and the Museum of the History of Catalonia. These institutions offer educational activities suitable for all audiences.

  • The historic area features the Drassanes Reials, the old Gothic shipyards, which now house the Maritime Museum, as well as the Portal de la Pau square, where you’ll find the iconic Christopher Columbus statue.

  • The promenade area, located at the Moll de la Fusta, is perfect for a leisurely walk, enjoying the sea views, and relaxing while watching the sunset.

  • The hotel area includes the famous Hotel W, known for its sail-like design, and the World Trade Center, with its circular shape that resembles the bow of a ship. This complex houses both offices and a luxurious hotel.

Museum of the history of Catalonia

If you’re a history enthusiast, you won’t want to miss the Museum of the History of Catalonia, located in a former port warehouse that was transformed into a museum in 1996. Here, you’ll find exhibits arranged chronologically, covering periods such as prehistory, Roman times, the Middle Ages, and modern history. The museum showcases a variety of objects and artworks that illustrate the cultural, social, and economic evolution of the region.

Maremagnum

If you prefer shopping and enjoying a good meal, you can visit the Maremagnum shopping centre. Opened in 1995 as part of the project to revitalise the Port of Barcelona and attract tourists, this modern building features more than 30 shops and restaurants where you can enjoy quality dishes with a view of the sea.

Aquarium

One of the major attractions of Port Vell is its aquarium, the largest in Europe. Each year, it ranks as one of the five most visited attractions in Barcelona. Here, you can see a wide variety of marine creatures, walk through an 80-metre-long underwater tunnel, and learn about the different ecosystems of the Mediterranean Sea. With 35 aquariums and over 11,000 animals from 450 different species, a visit of at least two hours is recommended to fully enjoy all that it offers.

Markets

The vast space of Port Vell often hosts a variety of markets. Near the Portal de la Pau, you’ll find an antiques and collectibles market every weekend, which has been a tradition for over 20 years. Here, you can buy vinyl records, books, toys, jewellery, and much more.

Another common market in the area is the food fairs, held several times a month to celebrate traditional Catalan cuisine.

Additionally, during Christmas, a festive market is set up where you can purchase all kinds of items to decorate your home for the holiday season, as well as gifts, handicrafts, and food stalls selling Christmas specialties like turrón (nougat) and panettone. You can also enjoy a large Christmas tree, standing over 30 metres tall, adorned with LED lights, as well as a floating nativity scene.

Golondrinas

One of the most popular activities for families and tourists is taking a boat ride on the “golondrinas” (swallows). These two-deck boats have been operating for over 125 years, offering a 40-minute cruise along the Mediterranean waters of Port Vell. During the ride, you can enjoy sights such as the Clock Tower, the Sideroploid sculpture, and stunning views of Montjuïc.

Port Vell area

The Port Vell area is located in the heart of Barcelona, surrounded by Las Ramblas, Barceloneta, and just a short walk from the Gothic Quarter. A leisurely stroll will lead you to the charming neighbourhoods of El Born, where you can explore unique spots and enjoy a great meal.

The port is very close to Barceloneta Beach, making it the perfect place to take a refreshing dip in the sea. Additionally, the area boasts a wide variety of seafood and fish restaurants.

Living in the Barceloneta area is an excellent choice if you’re looking for the peace and quiet of a residential neighbourhood, while still being within easy reach of the city’s main attractions and the beach.
