Everything you need to know for your visit to the Wax Museum

History of the Barcelona Wax Museum

Museo de cera de Barcelona

The origins of the Barcelona Wax Museum date back to 1873, when the building was constructed to house the bank “El Comercio”, which safeguarded the jewellery, money, and valuables of Barcelona’s bourgeoisie.

Years later, the building was acquired by Caixa Vilumara, but it closed in 1914 when the Banco de Barcelona bought its shares and took over the premises. In 1922, ownership changed hands again to another bank until 1969. Its long history as a banking headquarters is the reason the street is called Pasaje de la Banca.

In 1973, architect and scenographer Enrique Alarcón was captivated by the building’s mysterious and charming aura, which reminded him of an old crime film. Inspired, he decided to create a wax museum and designed each room to tell a story, mimicking a film set.

The museum remained open for nearly 50 years until it underwent a complete renovation in 2020 to modernise its spaces. New lighting, sound, and technology systems were installed to offer visitors a more immersive experience.

The goal of this reopening was to stay relevant and appealing to all audiences by frequently adding new characters, such as wax figures of Billie Eilish, Greta Thunberg, and Alexia Putellas. Each figure, costing approximately €25,000, requires meticulous craftsmanship. The museum also has an adjacent workshop where repairs are carried out, with fingers being the most fragile and frequently damaged parts.

Architecture of the Barcelona Wax Museum

The museum building is a prime example of 19th-century neoclassicism. Despite numerous renovations and expansions, this style has been preserved, particularly on the façade, which features an impressive rounded arch portal alongside other doorways and windows.

Originally, the building had only one storey, but in 1892 a second floor was added, along with decorative elements such as the coat of arms of Catalonia, sculptures, and a balustrade on the rooftop.

The main entrance leads to a 19th-century staircase adorned with a red carpet, designed to make visitors feel as glamorous as the wax figures themselves. Inside, the museum’s rooms are divided into distinct settings, incorporating details from the original building, such as the Gothic-style hall inspired by the Saló del Tinell in the Palau Reial Major, or the vault from its banking days.

Museum rooms

The Barcelona Wax Museum features over 120 wax figures spread across 28 themed rooms covering topics like music, sports, cooking, and history.

Upon ascending the main staircase, visitors enter a room dedicated to Catalonia, showcasing videos and images of the region’s most iconic traditions, such as the Patum de Berga and the Castellers, along with figures of key historical figures from Catalonia.

Other rooms feature iconic personalities from literature, science, music, and painting, allowing visitors to take photos with figures like Cervantes, Shakespeare, Marie Curie, and Frida Kahlo.

The Sala Magna brings together famous names from the entertainment world, both past and present, including Rosalía, Taylor Swift, Elton John, and The Beatles.

One of the museum’s highlights is the vault, which remains exactly as it was when the building was a bank. This space has been adapted to depict a heist scene. Previously, it featured a recreation inspired by Bonnie & Clyde, but it was recently updated to reflect a robbery from the popular series “Money Heist” (La Casa de Papel).

Another popular attraction in recent years is the room dedicated to Game of Thrones, featuring a replica of one of the saga’s famous dragons.

In addition to the iconic figures, the museum also includes a horror passage, where visitors can come face-to-face with some of cinema’s most infamous serial killers.

Other attractions

In the small square where the Wax Museum is located, there are other popular stops for both tourists and locals that complement a visit to the museum.

The most famous is El Bosc de les Fades, a café designed to resemble an enchanted forest, complete with fairies, goblins, and fountains. It’s an ideal spot to enjoy a coffee, cocktail, or snack after your museum visit.

If the museum souvenirs aren’t enough, you can visit El Passatge del Temps, an avant-garde shop celebrating the art of origami as a metaphor for the passage of time. Here, you’ll find unique and creative gifts.

Nearby, you’ll also find the former workshop where the wax figures were originally made. Today, it serves as a venue for private workshops and corporate events.
