Everything you need to know for your visit to Bellesguard Tower

Bellesguard Tower is one of Gaudí’s lesser-known works, yet it is steeped in history. Nestled at the foot of Collserola, this former castle has served as the residence of numerous important figures over the years and is now open to the public, inviting visitors to uncover its secrets. Let’s delve into its history and architecture.

History of Bellesguard Tower

Torre Bellesguard Barcelona

The Bellesguard Tower, also known as Casa Figueras, has been home to many significant figures in Catalonia’s history. One of its most prominent owners was King Martin I, also known as Martin the Humane, the last monarch of the House of Barcelona. He gave the tower its name, inspired by the “beautiful views” of Barcelona that can be admired from the site. In the 17th century, it also served as a refuge for the infamous bandit Serrallonga and played a key role during the Reapers’ War.

In 1900, the widow of Jaume Figueras, a merchant and close friend of Gaudí, commissioned the architect to construct a house on the site of the Bellesguard castle, with the aim of preserving its ties to Catalan history. During the building process, Gaudí reused medieval remnants from the original castle to shape the new structure, embedding various elements throughout the estate that reflect its historical origins.

After the project was completed in 1916, the house changed ownership several times over the next century. In 2018, it was sold to Catalana Occidente for €30 million, and since then, it has been open to the public.

Architecture of Bellesguard Tower

Gaudí designed Bellesguard Tower during his neo-Gothic period, blending this aesthetic with the modernist elements characteristic of his work. It was crucial for him to incorporate details that paid homage to the castle’s history and Catalonia’s heritage while restoring and integrating the remains of the medieval palace into the new design. As with all his projects, Gaudí studied the surrounding area extensively, using local slate to construct the building’s exterior.

To enhance the neo-Gothic style, known for its verticality, Gaudí designed elongated windows, making the tower appear taller than its actual height of nearly 20 metres. The standout feature is the famous octagonal tower, topped with a Gaudí-style four-armed cross, reaching over 30 metres.

The estate includes five floors, along with terraces, balconies, and gardens adorned with benches covered in Gaudí’s signature trencadís mosaic technique. The interior is bright and white, creating a striking contrast with the grey tones of the exterior.

Dragons play a vital role in this project, with four different ones crafted from various materials scattered throughout the castle. The most remarkable, yet often overlooked, dragon is located on the façade. The windows serve as its eyes, symbolising the castle’s protection and its deep connection to Catalan history.
