Guide: Visiting Tibidabo

Tibidabo is one of Barcelona’s most iconic landmarks, renowned not only for its amusement park and Gothic-style church but also for its breathtaking views. Situated near the Collserola mountain range, this spot offers something for everyone. Below, we’ll explore its history and the main areas of interest.

History of the Tibidabo

The name “Tibidabo” comes from the Latin phrase “tibi dabo,” meaning “I will give you,” referring to a biblical passage in which the devil offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world from a great height. This alludes to Tibidabo Mountain and the stunning panoramic views it offers of the city and the Mediterranean Sea.

The area as we know it today began to take shape in the 19th century, when an urban development project was launched to make the mountain more accessible to the public. As a result, the Tibidabo amusement park opened in 1901, and the construction of the Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was completed in the 1960s.

What to do at Tibidabo

Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart was designed by Enric Sagnier and completed by his son, as it took over 60 years to finish its construction. This significant place of worship not only stands out for its neo-Gothic architecture but also offers stunning views of the entire city from its terrace, where the sculpture of the Sacred Heart is located.

Tibidabo amusement park

This is the oldest amusement park in Spain and the third oldest in Europe. Covering an area of 70,000 square meters, the park combines classic and modern attractions, as well as shows and activities for all ages. Its influence was so great that Walt Disney was inspired by a visit in the 1950s to create his own theme parks.

Funicular

Inaugurated in 1901 as part of the area’s urban development plan, this funicular links the lower part of Barcelona with the upper reaches of Tibidabo Mountain. During the ride, you can enjoy views of modernist buildings and the Collserola Park. While the funicular is still in operation, the traditional blue tram that used to take visitors to the funicular station is temporarily closed for modernization works.

Tibidabo Area

The Tibidabo area offers many key attractions. The Collserola mountain range, with over 10,000 hectares of green spaces, is perfect for nature lovers. The Collserola Tower provides panoramic views from its observation deck, while the Fabra Observatory hosts activities for moon and planet watching. Nearby, you’ll also find CosmoCaixa, one of the most important science and technology museums in Europe.

All of these attractions are located in the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district, a highly sought-after area of Barcelona, known for its luxury homes and expansive green spaces. If you enjoy the peace of nature without giving up the comforts of city life, living in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi might be a great choice for you.

Plan your visit

How can I get to the points of interest at Tibidabo?
