Everything you need to know for your visit to the Montjuic Cemetery

The Montjuic Cemetery is a place steeped in history and art that offers wonderful panoramic views of Barcelona. It reflects the importance of Catalan modernism and the rich history of Catalonia, housing the tombs of some of the most important people of the region. Today, it represents a symbol of Barcelona’s collective memory. Below, we will talk about its history and the most significant elements in this great cemetery.

History of Montjuic Cemetery

Cementerio de Montjuic Barcelona

The Montjuic cemetery was inaugurated in 1883, due to the demographic growth of Barcelona and the lack of space in the other cemeteries of the city. Currently, the necropolis occupies most of the southern slope of the mountain and is the largest in the city.

The cemetery has played a very important role in the history of the city. Over the years and with the new extensions, archaeological sites from the Bronze Age, the Iberian, Roman and Medieval periods have been found.

In addition, in the cemetery we find the Fossar de la Pedrera, which was used as a mass grave for 4000 victims of Franco’s repression. Since 1985, the grave has housed the president of the Generalitat of Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War, Lluís Companys, who was executed by the Franco regime in 1940.

Some of the other famous people we can find in the cemetery are Ildefons Cerdà, Joan Gamper, Francesc Macià and Joan Miró, among others.

Architecture of Montjuic Cemetery

For the design of the cemetery, the architect Leandre Albareda was inspired by English gardens, combining elements of other architectural styles, such as neoclassicism and modernism.

The cemetery stands out for its funerary art; when visiting it, you will be able to observe large pantheons, mausoleums and other sculptures built by the best Catalan artists. Some of the most outstanding are the following:

  • The Farreras Framis tomb (1888): Realistic in style, Jaume Farreras was a professor of anatomy, which is why we find a figure of a skeleton wrapped in a cloth on top of the tombstone.

  • The Pere Llibre tomb (1888): Of modernist style, the impressive sculpture of the angel stands out.

  • The Batlló Pantheon (1889): Neo-Egyptian style, which was very popular during the period.

  • The Albareda Pantheon (1889): Neo-Egyptian style, it was built by and for the architect who designed the cemetery.

  • The August Urrutia Pantheon (1909-1911): Neoclassical in style, it is one of the most monumental pantheons in the cemetery, with a semicircular loggia with Ionic columns and an interior aisle. In the middle we find a disconsolate angel.
