Guide: visit Torre Glòries

Torre Glories is one of Barcelona’s most iconic skyscrapers. Located in Plaça de les Glòries in the Sant Martí district, its unmistakable shape has made it a defining landmark in the city’s skyline. In this guide, we will explain its origins, what’s inside the tower, and how to plan your visit to fully enjoy this architectural marvel and the surrounding area.

History

Vue aérienne Tour Glories

Torre Glòries, one of Barcelona’s most emblematic buildings, was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel between 1999 and 2005 at a cost of approximately €130 million.

Initially, the tower was built as the headquarters of the water company Aigües de Barcelona, which owned the building until 2010. During this period, most of the floors were used for corporate operations, while the remaining floors were rented to other companies.

After a failed attempt to convert the building into a luxury hotel, it was acquired by Merlin Properties in 2017, who have since used the tower as office space and a cultural center.

Design

The tower features 34 floors and four underground levels. Standing 144 meters tall, it is the third tallest building in Barcelona, after the Hotel Arts and Torre Mapfre. More than half of its 50,000 square meters are dedicated to office space.

The design of the tower is inspired by symbols of Catalan culture, including the bell towers of the Sagrada Família, the original design of the Hotel Attraction (an unrealized project by Gaudí), and the mountains of Montserrat. Nouvel also wanted to reference the owning company, Aigües de Barcelona, by designing the tower in a cylindrical shape with a dome, symbolizing a geyser in eruption.

Materials such as concrete, aluminum, and glass were used in its construction, but the most eye-catching feature is the façade’s 59,000 aluminum slats, which change color based on the time of day. The tower also features LED lights that illuminate it at night.

In addition to office space, the interior includes multipurpose rooms, a café, an auditorium in the underground floors, and the famous observation deck.

The observation deck

Among the tower’s attractions are three individual installations offering different observation experiences.

On the 30th floor, 125 meters above the ground, the main observation deck offers panoramic views of Barcelona, from the Sagrada Família to the Mediterranean Sea, and even contrasts between the city’s historic and modern neighborhoods.

However, panoramic views alone aren’t enough to truly understand a city. For that reason, the Hipermirador was created on floor -1. This interactive exhibition uses big data to portray Barcelona as a dynamic organism, with information on various topics such as the city’s architecture, flora and fauna, skies, and sea. These visual displays are accompanied by a background score, which changes daily based on current data like traffic and temperature.

Lastly, next to the main observation deck is the permanent installation by artist Tomás Saraceno, “Cloud Cities Barcelona.” This interactive artwork consists of over 100 cloud-like spaces connected by a web, symbolizing the interconnectedness of life in a city like Barcelona and the interdependence of its citizens.

Auditorium

The auditorium, located in the underground floors, is one of the most popular spaces for corporate events. With over 300 square meters and a capacity of 316 people, it is primarily used for conferences and cultural events and is available for private bookings. The design of the auditorium, like the rest of the tower, is futuristic and features cutting-edge sound and lighting technology.

Torre Glòries and its district

Torre Glòries is located in the 22@ district. Once the city’s industrial hub, this area is now one of Barcelona’s most modern zones, known as the Innovation District. It aims to become a global technology and business center, attracting companies from around the world.

The 22@ area is part of the larger Sant Martí district, a quiet neighborhood with various amenities nearby. You can visit the Westfield Glòries shopping center, office buildings not only in Torre Glòries but also in the surrounding area, university campuses, residential zones, and cultural sites such as the Forum and the Design Museum. You’ll also find green spaces and squares where you can escape the city’s hustle and bustle.

With all these benefits, renting an apartment in Sant Martí is an excellent option for everyone—families, students, tourists, or businesspeople.

Torre Glòries is also conveniently located at the intersection of Avinguda Diagonal, Avinguda Meridiana, and Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, making it easily accessible by both public transport and car.
