Everything you need to know for your visit to the Born Cultural Centre

The El Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria, also known as the Born Cultural Centre, is a space steeped in history spanning thousands of years. Housed in the former Mercat del Born, this centre is dedicated to preserving Barcelona’s heritage while promoting the city’s history and culture through exhibitions, cultural events, and educational activities.

Read on to discover the origins of this iconic site and the spaces and activities it offers.

History of the Born Cultural Centre

Centro Cultural del Born

The building was inaugurated in 1876 as a market, designed by architect José Fontseré, also known for his work on Ciutadella Park. Its modernist design stands out for its use of iron and glass, with a roof and large windows that allowed natural light to flood the space.

For decades, this market was a vital hub for the Ribera neighbourhood community until 1920, when it transitioned into a wholesale market for fruit and vegetables. However, in 1970, it closed following the opening of Mercabarna in Zona Franca, a larger and more modern facility.

In the 1980s, restoration work on the market began. During this process, archaeological remains from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance were unearthed. This discovery sparked the transformation of the site into a cultural centre dedicated to local history and heritage preservation.

Inaugurated in 2013, the centre has become one of the most visited museums in Barcelona. Its role in preserving the historical memory of the neighbourhood and hosting cultural activities has been key to strengthening the local community.

Design of the space

Although the centre has been modernised to suit contemporary needs, the building’s structure was fully preserved as it represents a prime example of Catalan modernism.

The archaeological remains are visible in the centre of the former market, where visitors can view them from the main floor or even descend to explore them up close. The layout of the centre allows visitors to journey through the history of the Ribera neighbourhood, presented chronologically from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Exhibitions and activities

The permanent exhibition, “Barcelona 1700: From Stones to People,” focuses on the history and evolution of the Ribera neighbourhood, particularly during the 18th century and significant events like the War of the Spanish Succession.

It provides a glimpse into 18th-century Barcelona society, highlighting key events such as the wars of 1691 and 1714. The exhibition features over 1,800 artefacts unearthed from the archaeological site, offering a detailed context of daily life in the neighbourhood during that era.

In addition to the permanent collection, the centre hosts a wide variety of temporary exhibitions, events, and activities that change throughout the year:

  • Temporary exhibitions: These range from children’s displays about Catalan culture to art exhibitions exploring themes like war and more.

  • Guided tours: The centre offers a variety of guided tours, often with thematic focuses depending on the season.

  • El Bornet: This family programme includes activities for all ages, such as workshops and summer camps, making it a great destination for families.
