Guide: visit Casa Vicens

Casa Vicens was Antoni Gaudí’s first major project and one of the earliest examples of Catalan modernism. Located in the Gràcia neighborhood, this building has undergone various transformations over the years. In this article, we will explore the history of Casa Vicens, its unique architecture, and its surroundings in the city of Barcelona.

History

Casa Vicens Barcelona

In 1878, Manuel Vicens i Montaner, a stockbroker, inherited a plot of land in the Vila de Gràcia and commissioned Antoni Gaudí to design a summer house for his family. At that time, Gràcia was an agricultural area, not yet part of Barcelona. Over time, however, it became popular among the Barcelona bourgeoisie as a location for second homes, thanks to its convenient proximity to the city. It wasn’t until 1897, due to industrialization and the need to connect Gràcia with Barcelona, that it officially became part of the city.

The project began in 1880, and between 1883 and 1885, construction transformed the empty plot into a single-family residence with four floors and a rooftop terrace. In 2005, Casa Vicens was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with seven other works by Gaudí.

Architecture

The building is a blend of Mudéjar art and other oriental influences, incorporating materials like ceramics, wrought iron, stained glass, and woodwork—signature elements of Catalan modernism. Upon visiting the site and observing the local vegetation, Gaudí drew inspiration from nature, incorporating botanical motifs throughout the house, such as the yellow tiles on the facade, which mimic the yellow flowers that grew on the plot before construction began. Natural symbols like these became a constant theme in Gaudí’s later works.

In 1925, the house’s new owner, Dr. Jover, decided to expand the property, transforming it from a summer home into a permanent residence. Jover purchased adjacent plots to enlarge the garden, reaching a maximum area of 1,738 square meters. At the time, Gaudí was busy with the Sagrada Família project, so he recommended Joan Baptista Serra, a fellow architect, to handle the expansion. Serra’s renovations converted the house into three separate apartments, one on each floor. He also built a waterfall and a chapel dedicated to Santa Rita in the garden, although these were later demolished to make way for new housing in the area.

Over the years, Casa Vicens changed ownership several times, with each new renovation diluting Gaudí’s distinctive style. Before opening the house to the public, significant restoration work was done to recover as much of the original design as possible. In 2004, the house was sold to the Andorran bank MoraBanc, which restored it and converted it into a museum, opening its doors to the public in 2017. During the renovations, some of Serra’s garden extensions were removed, and the basement, garden, and second floor were adapted for visitors and exhibitions.

Exterior

The exterior of the house showcases clear Islamic influences, with large masonry walls interspersed with yellow tiles on the main facade. However, Islamic design is not the only inspiration; the facade also features Japanese-style wooden lattices with geometric patterns. These oriental elements contrast with the tribune facade, which includes inscriptions from Catalan folk tales.

On the rooftop, Gaudí designed a walkable terrace, inspired by the architecture of India, Morocco, and Egypt. The 150-square-meter surface features three chimneys and a minaret-like tower, reminiscent of typical mosque structures.

Interior

The interior of Casa Vicens is predominantly built from masonry walls, while the basement, originally used as a wine cellar and storage area, is made of vaulted brickwork. The ceilings of the upper floors are constructed from wooden beams.

The main floor, covering 162 square meters, houses the reception hall, dining room, tribune, and smoking room, all separated by small hexagonal vestibules to improve flow and sound insulation. The first floor contains the bedrooms, complete with en-suite bathrooms, dressing rooms, and terraces, all decorated with frescoes depicting natural landscapes and seascapes.

The second floor, which housed the servants’ quarters, is far more modest, prioritizing functionality over aesthetics. Today, this floor is used for exhibitions.
