Everything you need to know for your visit to Casa Lleó Morera

Casa Lleó i Morera is much more than an emblematic building on Passeig de Gracia: it is a living testimony to an era of artistic grandeur and innovation, where family history merges with modernist genius to give rise to a space charged with symbolism and beauty. Both its rich and complex history and its elaborate architectural design remind us of the importance of preserving cultural heritage and appreciating the value of the details in every corner of this unforgettable Barcelona landmark.

History of Casa Lleó Morera

casa lleo morera

The origin of the Lleó Morera house dates back to 1864, when the original house, known as Casa Rocamora, was built for the Mumbrú Sagristá family. This family, important in the textile industry of 19th century Barcelona, lived in the house until 1894, when the Mumbrú brothers sold the building to Antoni Morera Busó.

Antoni Morera was a businessman who had become rich trading sugar cane in Puerto Rico. When he returned to Catalonia, he invested part of his fortune in buying the building. In 1902, Antoni’s niece, Francesca Morera inherited the building and commissioned the modernist architect Lluís Doménech y Montaner to renovate it, reforming both the interior layout and the façade. The architect was one of the most important figures of the modernist movement, combining detailed ornamentation and organic forms inspired by nature.

But before the work was completed, Francesca died, leaving the building to her son Albert Lleó i Morera, who gave the building its name. During the first years after the renovation, the apartment was used partly as a residence for the Lleó i Morera family and partly for commercial and cultural functions, such as a photography studio or concert hall.

After belonging to the Lleó i Morera family, the house passed through the hands of various properties and companies. In 2005, it became part of the Nuñez i Navarro real estate group, which was in charge of rehabilitating and recovering many of the original modernist elements of the facade.

The location of the building is a key point to understand the history of the Casa Lleó i Morera. Located in Passeig de Gracia, here we find several decorative and architectural elements of modernist character, which are reflected especially in the well-known Block of Discord, as the Casa Lleó i Morera is very close to Gaudí’s Casa Batlló and Puig i Cadafalch’s Casa Amatller. These three buildings were built by three of the most important modernist architects in the history of Catalonia, and form an architectural ensemble that is impossible not to admire.

Currently, the Casa Lleó Morera is mostly used as offices and commercial space. Although it is not usually open to the public for guided tours like other modernist monuments in Barcelona, on special occasions they open the doors to the public. In the meantime, you can always admire the impressive facade of the building.

Architecture of Casa Lleó Morera

Lluís Domenech i Montanter’s project was to renovate a 19th century building into a jewel of Catalan modernism, using materials such as ceramics, iron and wood.

The facade of the building is symmetrical, as Lluis Domenech wanted to achieve visual harmony by placing a cylindrical tribune on the main floor that just overlooks the corner of the building and draws the attention of anyone passing by. We can see several sculptures on the facade of female figures, some of them destroyed in the rehabilitation works. Even so, on the second floor we find figures representing the technological advances of the time; photography, electricity, the phonograph and the telephone. In the window grills and in the railings of the terraces, we observe elements made with wrought iron, very typical in modernist architecture.

Another element that is repeated in the building is the design inspired by natural and organic forms, not only in the facade, but also in the interior. We see it in the curves and the stained glass windows that reproduce shapes and colors reminiscent of flowers.

Something that stands out from the outside is the pavilion on the terrace of the building. Its structure, formed by columns and a dome, shows the ornamental taste of modernism, but it also has an interesting history related to its use during the Spanish Civil War. Although it originally had no specific function, during the war it was used as a machine gun nest, which gives it an additional historical context that contrasts with its original aesthetic function.

Inside, we continue to observe the modernist style. The lobby and foyer are full of irregularities and movements sculpted in the stone, which give the sensation of fluidity and dynamism. Something that attracts a lot of attention in this area is the ceiling covered by detailed stained-glass windows that allow natural light to enter.

Domenech i Montaner worked with Gaspar Homar to create some of the interior furniture, which today can be found in the MNAC. Even so, you can still see the stained-glass windows, lamps, sofas and cabinets that decorate the interior, with naturalist and modernist elements. This makes the light filtering through the colorful windows create patterns and shapes inspired by nature.

In the great halls of the building, which the family used for social gatherings, we find many stained glass windows, mosaics and porcelain sculptures that narrate photographs of the family, in addition to the columns decorated with wrought iron floral details. The hallways and bedrooms have restored parquet floors and Roman mosaics on the walls.
