Everything you need to know for your visit to Casa Calvet

Casa Calvet, one of Gaudí’s first works, is a modernist building located in l’Eixample Dreta that clearly shows the evolution of the architect’s style. Today, although the building is a restaurant, you can appreciate all the details of Gaudí’s marvelous work. Below, we explore the origin of the building and its architecture.

History of Casa Calvet

Casa Calvet Barcelona large view

Casa Calvet was designed by Antoni Gaudí for the heirs of the textile manufacturer Pere Màrtir Calvet. The family bought a plot of land on Casp Street at the end of the 19th century. This was the first of several of Gaudí’s works in l’Eixample, and the only one to win the Barcelona City Council’s award for best house of the year.

When Casa Calvet was built, the Eixample area was considered the perfect place for the new buildings of the Barcelona bourgeoisie, so Gaudí had to design something that would fit in with the luxurious buildings around it, which is why it is considered his most conservative work.

The building was divided into a basement and a first floor where the textile business was located, the main floor was the owner’s home and the upper floors were rental apartments, which was a very common distribution at that time.

Initially, the plans for the building were not approved by the city council, as they exceeded the maximum height allowed. In response, the architect drew a red line where the height limit was, threatening to leave it unfinished if he had to reduce it to that height. The threat worked, as the city council let him continue with the original plan.

In 1927 the building was sold to another family, and years later, the main establishment became a Chinese restaurant that is still active today.

Architecture of Casa Calvet

The Casa Calvet is a work of Gaudí’s naturalist stage, away from Arab, Oriental, Romanesque and Gothic influences, with this project he focused on the Baroque style and natural elements. However, the modernist style characteristic of the architect is still very present, with elements such as the curves of the facade or the use of wrought iron.

Of its architecture, the exterior stands out, built with stone from the quarry of Montjuic, and with three busts that pay homage to the owner and two saints of his town. Throughout the building we find elements that refer to the Catalan culture, the Calvet family and their trade, such as the columns that look like spools of thread or the symbols of mushrooms, of which Pere Calvet was a great fan.

Inside, the main highlights are the hall and the first floor, which are decorated with blue mosaics, granite columns and arches with vine-shaped reliefs. In addition, much of the furniture was designed by Gaudí, using oak wood and with a very modernist style. Currently, this furniture can be visited in the Gaudí house-museum in Parc Güell.

How to get there

How can I get to Casa Calvet?

You can walk from Plaza Catalunya in less than 10 minutes, or from Urquinaona metro stop (L3). By bus, you can get off at the stops Llúria – Urquinaona, a 2-minute walk, or Casp – Pau Claris, a 4-minute walk.

Is it possible to visit the interior of Casa Calvet?

Unfortunately, Casa Calvet cannot be visited, as it is a privately owned building with housing. However, you can visit the cafeteria on the first floor and the Chinese restaurant, where you can enjoy the elements of the building.
