Guide: visiting the Camp Nou

The Camp Nou stadium is a must-visit for football fans. Not only can you enjoy the stadium itself, but you can also explore its museum, the club’s official store, the Palau Blaugrana, and much more. In this guide, we’ll tell you everything about the stadium’s history, its facilities, and the various spaces of FC Barcelona around the city.

The history of FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona was founded following an advertisement in a sports magazine looking for players to form a football team.

In its first decade, the club faced financial struggles and lacked a permanent stadium. It wasn’t until 1909 that the team inaugurated its first official stadium, located on Carrer de París, where they played until 1922. That year, with a growing fanbase, the club decided to move to a larger venue. The second stadium was built in the Les Corts neighbourhood, where it remained until 1957.

During the club’s 50th anniversary celebrations, 25,000 members gathered, once again highlighting the need for a bigger space. As a result, in the mid-1950s, construction of the Camp Nou began. With a seating capacity of 99,000, it became the largest stadium in Europe.

The new Camp Nou

Currently, the Camp Nou is undergoing renovation as part of the Espai Barça project, with the work expected to be completed by the end of December 2024. There are several reasons for these renovations. On one hand, the club aims to increase the stadium’s capacity to 105,000 spectators and add a roof. On the other hand, the goal is to install 18,000 square metres of photovoltaic panels and create a 25-hectare pedestrianised garden to make the site more sustainable.

The new Palau Blaugrana, which will be built where the old Miniestadi once stood, will also be renovated. The aim is to expand its capacity from 10,000 to 15,000 people, not only to accommodate sports events but also to host cultural activities such as concerts and shows.

Globally, the objective of this project is to transform the Barça campus into an open, green space that hosts both sports and family activities, blending the neighbourhood life of Les Corts with that of the club’s supporters.

Camp Nou facilities

The Camp Nou area includes not only the football stadium but also a range of other attractions that are worth visiting for any true Barça fan.

The Barça museum

The museum is currently temporarily housed in the old ice rink. Its 2,400 square metres provide an interactive experience that lets visitors explore the club’s past, present, and future. Inside, you’ll find the team’s vast trophy collection, various club memorabilia, and exhibits on some of the greatest players in Barça’s history.

Camp Nou museo

The official Barça store

The FC Barcelona official store, located inside the Camp Nou, covers over 2,000 square metres and offers a wide range of club-related products, including customisable shirts and collectible items. In addition to this store, there are other official Barça shops throughout Barcelona and in other cities across Spain.

Palau Blaugrana

The Palau Blaugrana is a multi-purpose sports hall that was inaugurated in 1971. It hosts matches for Barça’s basketball, handball, roller hockey, and futsal teams. With a seating capacity of over 7,000 spectators, it was also a key venue during the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, where it hosted several competitions, including roller hockey, judo, and taekwondo.
In addition to its sporting events, the Palau Blaugrana also features several spaces that can be used for corporate events or private functions. There are also various restaurants on site, offering a chance to dine before or after a match.

Other FC Barcelona facilities

The ice rink

The Camp Nou has an ice rink located next to the Palau Blaugrana. However, it is currently being used as a temporary museum due to the closure of the original museum while the stadium undergoes renovations. In the past, Barça’s ice hockey matches and figure skating events were held here, but this is no longer the case for now.
It is planned that by 2025, a new temporary ice rink will be built within the sports facilities of the University of Barcelona, just a 25-minute walk from the original rink.

Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys

This stadium, originally built in 1929 for the International Exposition, is located on Montjuïc Hill. In the 1980s, it was renovated for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and has since hosted numerous sports and cultural events.
Due to the ongoing works at the Camp Nou, it was decided that the Olympic Stadium would be the most suitable venue to host Barça’s football matches in the meantime. Before the new season began, additional work was carried out to increase its seating capacity.

Joan Gamper Sports Complex

Located in Sant Joan Despí, the Joan Gamper Sports Complex covers nearly 137,000 square metres. It is home to FC Barcelona’s football training centre, as well as the training grounds for the women’s football team and the venue for their competitions. The complex includes several pitches, the famous La Masia, and a multi-purpose pavilion.

  • La Masia, also known as the Oriol Tort Training Centre, is the residence for the club’s future professional players. This renowned FC Barcelona academy underwent modernisation and was reopened in 2011. Today, it spans 6,000 square metres and can accommodate 82 young athletes.

  • The Johan Cruyff Stadium, inaugurated in 2019, is the first completed installation of the Espai Barça project. With a seating capacity of 6,000, it is the main ground used by players from the training centre as well as the women’s team. Its construction led to the closure of the Miniestadi, which was previously the venue for matches played by both teams.

The Camp Nou area

The Camp Nou is located in the Les Corts district, one of the most exclusive areas of Barcelona. While it may not be close to the city’s main tourist attractions, it is home to several green spaces, such as the Maternitat Gardens (Jardines de la Maternitat), the Pedralbes Gardens, and the Cervantes Park. Additionally, its proximity to the Diagonal Avenue provides easy access to other important areas of the city.

Les Corts is a residential neighbourhood known for its family-friendly atmosphere and spacious areas perfect for relaxation. This peaceful environment, combined with excellent transport links through the metro and bus services, as well as a wide range of dining options, makes it an ideal place to live for families, students, and professionals alike.
